Last week, I reviewed the newly released VirtualBox 3. The experience was simply phenomenal. VirtualBox 3 brings in a host of new features and improvements, most notable among them the revamped network stack and 3D effects for guest machines.
In my review, I only briefly mentioned the 3D support, but did not dwell too long on this topic. Well, now time has come for a little exhibition. Enjoy the wonders of virtualization technology - Compiz Fusion on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, running as a guest machine on a Windows XP SP3 host! Let's do this!
Getting things ready ...
You will first have to install Ubuntu and then install the Guest Additions for your virtual machine. After that, just enable the 3D acceleration and Voila! Bob's your uncle!
The test machine was a four-year-old Athlon San Diego with Nvidia 6600GT card, half of its 128MB memory dedicated to the guest machine. The visual effects were smooth and pleasant with no delays or jitters.
Here we go ... and to think this was just science fiction a few months ago ...
Well, what more can I say? I did mention VirtualBox 3 is simply amazing. If this little demonstration is not enough of a reason to grab a copy and install it, well ... Have fun playing with this new toy, I know I will! P.S. In the next article, I'll show you some cool DirectX tricks, so stay tuned for Monday!
